Chantale (name changed) was assaulted and raped while walking in her neighborhood, not far from her house. She was attacked in a vacant lot on her way home. Her attackers were never arrested. She is portrayed here with her MSF psychologist.
Sexual Violence in Haiti Sexual violence in Haiti is a true problem. Women are consistently made victims of sexual violence and they have little or no recourse either through their family or the law. Rapes, domestic violence are an accepted fact of life in the country and especially in the slums. Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) offers psychological treatment and medical diagnoses to help treat the victims wounds.

The cholera epidemic in Haiti is far from over, with a sharp increase in cases seen in the capital, Port-au-Prince, and outbreaks reported elsewhere in the country.
“Since May 29—in one week—MSF has treated almost 2,000 patients in the capital, and we have also been asked to intervene in other areas in the interior of the country,” said MSF head of mission, Romain Gitenet. “Workload should be shared and coordinated in order to increase cholera treatment capacity in Haiti. Too many public facilities are still inadequate.”

A man infected with cholera being treated at a local hospital in the village of Archaie, Haiti.
On Tuesday, the Haitian government announced that the death toll from the cholera outbreak that began last month had surpassed 1,000. MSF teams saw cases increasing across the country with particular spikes in the capital, Port-au-Prince, and the northern cities of Cap Haitien, Port de Paix, and Gros Morne.
The fundamental paradox remains in place: an easily treatable and preventable disease continues to claim lives.

The team of nephrologists found a working dialysis machine, and has treated 6 patients with dialysis yesterday. More machines have arrived, meaning treatments can be offered to more patients with “crush syndrome”.
Crush syndrome is a condition in which muscle tissue damaged by severe internal injury may release massive quantities of toxins into the bloodstream and lead to kidney failure. MSF flew in four dialysis machines and medicines needed to treat the syndrome. Left untreated, crush syndrome can be fatal.
