Somali Region, Ethiopia – March 2006
This image from 2006 shows southeastern Ethiopia where cattle have over-grazed the soil. Human wood-gathering for domestic fuel use further eroded land and desertified the area. Subsequently, cattle died in a devastating drought and their carcasses littered the land. Cattle are the only source of income for these local herdsmen.
